This exhibition catalog reexamines the early to mid-period activities of Gutai, the avant-garde group that pioneered postwar Japan, from the perspective of matter, body, and action. Starting with the "handshake between matter and spirit" proposed by artist Jiro Yoshihara in 1954, the catalog traces Gutai's history as a group that has reexamined painting, sculpture, and the art of action across a broad range of disciplines. It features 55 color plates, 20 archival photographs, and texts and a chronology from the group's journal, Gutai. As the exhibition title "Unfinished" suggests, the group's dissolution was not a "death" moment. Rather, the catalog maintains the perspective that their practice continues to reshape the possibilities of art, providing an opportunity to reaffirm the Kansai-originated avant-garde movement in Tokyo. With pages in both Japanese and English, this volume remains a valuable reference for providing a bird's-eye view of postwar Japanese art history.
