This book is the 14th issue of the quarterly photography magazine "View," launched in May 1977 by Toshio Yamada, a graduate of the "Tomatsu Shomei Classroom," a Terakoya-style "Workshop Photography School" led by Shomei Tomatsu and others in the late 1970s. Yamada had been actively working in his hometown of Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, where he had established a mini-gallery called "Photo Shop Astoria" using his own photography shop. In order to expand his limited market in northern Kanto, he decided to present his work through a "quarterly magazine" rather than a "gallery." In collaboration with local artists and fellow photographers, he presented numerous works, occasionally introducing works by members of Tokyo galleries such as "Camp" and "Put." A total of 15 issues were published through June 1981. This publication is a prime example of the "off-magazine" trend that began around the 1970s, where photographers started their own "media" and freely presented their ideas and work. The text and illustrations are highly engaging.
