Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama's "LA UNO One Picture Book Two #38" is a collection of small, compact works compiled as a series of monochrome photographs of the alleyways and houses of Santa Monica, Venice, and Marina on Los Angeles's west coast, captured over just two days in 2015 when he traveled to the West Coast to participate in an exhibition in the United States. This 38th volume in the series is a collector's edition limited to 500 copies and includes a signed original print. Alleyway walls, fragments of everyday life, and torrents of light and shadow, Moriyama's pursuit of "urban physicality" and the boundary between "seeing and being seen" remains intact even after moving from the alleys of Shinjuku, Tokyo, to the foreign land of Los Angeles's west coast, leaving a mark with its rough grain, heavy contrast, and momentary disconnection. In the 16 pages of this book, Moriyama's gaze blurs the boundaries between "exterior" and "private space," subtly touching the viewer's memories and physical sensations. Though it is a small book, it condenses the expansiveness of the city and leaves plenty of space for the viewer to turn their gaze.
