"I and I" is a collection of works by Japanese female photographer Tomoko Kikuchi (1966-). Born in Tokyo, Kikuchi has been based in China since the 1990s, documenting rapidly changing society and its people with a deeply intimate perspective. Learning Chinese and conducting long-term research into transgender communities and nightlife, she has established a unique perspective that transcends mere documentary of a foreign land, intersecting the inner lives of her subjects with social structures. This book is an important collection of her early works, bringing together her signature series. Through portraits and everyday fragments, she meticulously depicts the complex layers of emotion—from loneliness and pride to relationships with family and lovers—that lurk beneath glamorous appearances. The structure quietly conveys the trust built between the photographs and their subjects, demonstrating the artist's origins, which led to her later Fukushima series. This work won the 29th (2004) Kimura Ihei Photography Award.
