New York (2024) is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Keizo Kitajima. Published in 1982, Kitajima's New York (Byakuya Shobo) was his breakthrough work, photographed in New York in 1981 and 1982, and earned him the Kimura Ihei Photography Award. The black-and-white snapshots capture the sometimes violent, sometimes turbulent, American underground culture, where people and the city clashed violently. These snapshots are typical of Kitajima's early work, known as the "Sniper." However, Kitajima returned to New York in the mid-1980s and took more snapshots, though he never compiled them into a collection. However, unlike the early 1980s, these images capture a time when people from around the world were beginning to flock to the city, heralding the dawn of globalization. This new edition includes both the black-and-white images from the early 1980s and the color images from the mid-1980s onward. Kitajima is known as an author who is very careful about the timing of his publications, and has left behind works about the Soviet Union such as "USSR 1991." This book makes one think that he chose to publish this work at this time to sound the alarm about the never-ending war and the global trend of prioritizing the interests of each country in the name of globalization.
