Chicago is a collection of works by American photographer Mark Steinmetz (1961–). Known for his monochrome work that captures the atmosphere of everyday life with soft shadows, Steinmetz imbues his images with a unique sense of depth through his sense of distance from his subjects and quiet compositions. Set in the city of Chicago, this book captures the silhouettes of people on street corners, moments of movement, and layers of time floating in vacant lots, captured in elegant images. Through anonymous scenes such as the light between buildings, the presence of a bus stop, and the profile of a young person, the loneliness and intimacy of the city emerge simultaneously. Featuring an essay by Peter Galassi, this book conveys the breath of photography and the tension of printmaking on every page. First edition, limited to 1,500 copies.
