"New Edition Katsura Imperial Villa (2014)" is a photo collection by leading Japanese photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto. It ranks alongside "One Day, One Place" (1958) and "Chicago, Chicago" (1969). Returning to Japan in the early 1950s, Ishimoto was captivated by the unity and rhythm of Katsura's gardens, architecture, and space, which he saw in Kyoto and Nara that year. He stayed overnight at the renowned Kyoto inn, Tawaraya, to photograph the complex. The first edition, published in 1960, features a preface and text by leading Japanese architect Kenzo Tange and Bauhaus president Walter Gropius, layout and cover design by fellow Bauhaus alumnus Herbert Bayer, and the title lettering by artist Toko Shinoda, making it a timeless masterpiece. The 1971 edition was completely revised in terms of illustrations and layout by Yusaku Kamekura, a leading Japanese graphic designer who was also responsible for the design of "Chicago, Chicago." This is a new edition published in 2014 of the Heisei edition originally published in 2010. It includes new illustrations taken in 1981, and the editorial and printing have also been completely renewed.
