Apiary is a collection of works by London-based photographer Robin Friend (1983-). Friend grew up in Melbourne and, following his debut work, Bastard Countryside, continues to capture the surreal and eerie landscapes lurking in the British countryside. Set against the backdrop of Guy Fawkes Night in Lewes, southeast England, this book explores dark memories and the instability of collectivity through the metaphor of night. The intense cropping and detailed cutouts captured with a cinema lens highlight the tensions and political space hidden within crowds, questioning how visual images are connected to social structures. Friend's work, a "shadow space" that reflects the fragility of democracy and the cracks of division, embodies the poetic depth of photography and its political implications.
