Japanese photographer Yoshinori Mizutani presents "Tokyo Parrots," a collection of photographs by the photographer. Mizutani has focused on flocks of small birds—budgerigars and other parakeets—lurking in the darkness of urban nightscapes, capturing these "otherworldly beings" living in the corners of the metropolis. His close-ups of these tiny birds, framed by the city's lights and shadows, quietly blur the boundaries between the ordinary and the extraordinary. This collection was published by IMA Photobooks in 2014. His photographs of small birds appearing in parks and residential areas late at night exude a mystical quality, evoking the feeling of an unexpected encounter in another world, while also delicately conveying the reality of their ecology hidden within urban life. While seemingly inconspicuous, the "green feathers" blending seamlessly into the hustle and bustle of the city, they also serve as a symbolic presence that questions the relationship between humans and nature, expanding the viewer's imagination. Rather than being excessively explanatory, this book is written with a tranquil gaze and a structure that leaves room for explanation, and it reflects the reality of deep empathy and perception of the small lives that lurk in the setting of the city.
