"W/O" is a photo collection by Japanese film director Hiroki Haseui. Born in Nagoya in 1976, he went to the United States in his teens to study video production, and has since been active both in Japan and abroad as a film director and photographer. While he also has a face as a filmmaker, such as his feature film "Blanca and the Guitarist" (2015), which was highly praised at the Venice International Film Festival, his poetic gaze is also strongly reflected in his photographic works. This book is a collection of his early works published in 2001. The title "W/O" means "without," and the subject is the young people living around the time of the closure of the Komaba dormitory at the University of Tokyo, and the theme is "absence" that seems to fall out of systems and time. The photographs are a mix of documentary and personal perspectives, and quiet passion resides in the grainy monochrome. A video work of the same name was later produced, and this book can be said to be a document that visually condenses that worldview. Limited to 3,000 copies.
