"Shadow of Light" is a collection of works by British photographer Bill Brandt. Born in Germany in 1904 and naturalized in the UK, Brandt is known for a wide range of styles, from documentary works that record British society in the 1930s and 1950s to highly poetic and abstract nudes and landscapes. Influenced by Atget and Man Ray, he established his own style, making full use of the strong contrast of light and shadow to bring out the fantasy hidden in reality. This book is a photo collection published in 1979 by the Tokyo Polytechnic University Junior College Press, and is a valuable book that was planned and supervised by Eikoh Hosoe. It contains a diverse range of works, such as street corners of industrial cities, indoor nudes, and landscapes exposed to the wind and rain, and strongly highlights Brandt's side as a visual poet. The book is hardcover with a slipcase and comes with detailed explanations and translations (only in Japanese). The photo book is also highly complete, and is a collection of works that has an important meaning in Japanese photography culture.
