Merry is a collection of works by Japanese art director Takatsugu Mizutani. In 1999, Mizutani himself started the art project Merry, which collects "smiles and messages". This project continues to this day, and has delivered more than 50,000 smiles and messages to 34 countries around the world. The first project was the Harajuku project. The power of the girls who gather in Harajuku was continuously photographed, and led to an exhibition using the entire building of Laforet Harajuku, and even crossing the ocean, leading to a full-scale exhibition titled Harajuku Merry at Selfridges in London the following year. The illustrations are reminiscent of the youth fashion that appears in FRUIT, a magazine that promotes "Japanese fashion" from Harajuku, and this book contains over 460 portraits carefully selected from the images exhibited at Harajuku Merry, and also includes messages from the girls. "The energy of the streets makes me happy. By Paul Smith" (from the obi).
