The Banquet is a photo book by Nobuyoshi Araki (1940-), one of Japan's leading photographers. Influenced by his father, a clog craftsman and amateur photographer, he started photography, and after graduating from the Department of Photographic Printing Engineering at Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering, he joined Dentsu. In 1971, while working, he published a private edition of Sentimental Journey, and began his career as a photographer. To date, he has published 500 photo books and successfully held large-scale solo exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. As the title suggests, this book is a collection of photos of the meals Araki ate. It was created by his beloved wife Yoko, who died young, and is an essential part of Araki's photography. The close-up color photos of the meals are vivid and grotesque, yet give an erotic impression that is characteristic of Araki, and the extensive menu of the meals described gives a sense of Yoko's love. The second half of the book, which begins with the words "meals were an affair with death," is a home-cooked meal for Araki, who had only one month left to live, and the book is turned into black and white. This book gives a glimpse into the relationship between Araki and Yoko, a couple who remain in the history of Japanese photography, even through a meal. Published in Parr & Badger Vol. I.
