Amateurs & Lovers is a collection of works by Nikolai Bakarev, a photographer from Siberia, Russia. Born in Mikhailovka, a village with a population of less than 10,000 in the eastern part of the Russian Federation, Bakarev worked as a machinist and factory photographer in a factory in the former Soviet Union in the 1980s, but in his private life he secretly took portraits and even took nude photos of intimate partners indoors. However, under the strict control of a socialist state, depicting nudity and eroticism was of course taboo, so it is likely that he did so in secret. After the 1990s, as the iron curtain and cold winds gradually disappeared, Bakarev's works began to be exhibited at exhibitions in Europe and elsewhere, and in 2016, a collection of works by Stanley / Barker, a British independent publisher known for publishing high-quality photo books, titled Novokuznetsk, was published. This is a zine-type book published in 2013 by Dashwood Books in New York. These works, which do not appear to have been intended for public viewing, are fascinating not only for the solid relationship of trust between the photographer and the subjects, but also for the free and rich spirit of the subjects, which they would not show in public. Limited to 500 copies.
