Day Sleeper is a collection of works by Sam Contis, an American female photographer. Born in Pittsburgh, USA in 1982, Contis is a photographer and filmmaker based in Oakland, California. She is known for her diverse style of expression, including sound, performance, installation, and printmaking. Furthermore, she is known for her wonderful attitude of not simply categorizing things, but continuing to challenge the multi-layered and complex vision of the world, and her book Deep Springs (2017), which is based on a liberal arts college, is a masterpiece. This book is a collaboration with Dorothea Lange, a pioneer of American female photography. The illustrations, selected from her vast archive and edited by Contis, derive a different worldview from the stoic image of Lange that we imagine. Lang is famous for his portraits of farmers and laborers living in harsh environments, and we were attracted to Contis' unique theme of "Day Sleeper," which evokes a lesser known side of these subjects. This is a collection of works that we admire for the brilliance of Contis, who has given us a "new image of Lang."
