Sunlanders is a collection of works by Shawn Rotman, an American photographer. His wife is Japanese, and he currently lives and works in Kyoto with his family. He has published five collections of works so far. He has left behind unique, handmade collections of works, such as Middle Life Notes (2020), which is a compilation of photographs and texts that tell the story of his childhood dreaming of becoming a novelist, meeting his current wife, Ariko, traveling the world, and arriving in Kyoto, and Amoeba (2021), a personal love story about meeting his wife, getting married, having children, and creating a family. And this is his first book, published in 2016. The title Sunlanders is a coined word that evokes the image of "the land of the rising sun (Japan)". The book is composed of illustrations taken in Japan in the 2010s, using color prints by himself that are different from the original image of Japan and evoke a utopia, and is more of a "dream about Japan" than a modern Japan. Limited to 1,000 copies.
