"Uwajima" is a photo collection by Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's leading photographers. After dropping out of a technical high school, he worked as an assistant to a commercial designer in Osaka from the mid-1950s. Moriyama turned to photography and joined the studio of Takeji Iwamiya, a leading figure in the Kansai photography world, in 1960, before moving to Tokyo and becoming an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe. He became active as a photographer in the late 1960s, met Takuma Nakahira and joined "Provoke", and from the 1970s onwards produced masterpieces such as "Hunter" and "Goodbye Photography". This book is a collection of snapshots taken during a trip to Uwajima at the time of the launch of the magazine "Coyote" in 2004, and includes photos not published in the magazine. The guide is the artist Shinro Ohtake, and at the end of the book is Ohtake's essay "Daido's Mettameta Lecture - A Photoshoot in Uwajima". The photographs are laid out in the same size as complimentary prints, and feature Moriyama's distinctive perspective, including the atmosphere and nostalgic scenes unique to regional cities, as well as typically Japanese coasts and seaside scenes, signboard shops, show windows, and unique structures (including a shot of Otake's studio).
