Down Under (Softcover) is a photo collection by Australian photographer Peter James. Born in Sydney in 1947, James started swimming at a young age and was a representative swimmer for his school at university. His first encounter with lifesaving was when he was accidentally rescued on Bronte Beach in New South Wales, and he has been following lifesavers along the Australian coast ever since. This book is a collection of works published in 1985, and is a compilation of the work James had taken up to that point. It includes footage of the well-trained and beautifully muscular lifesavers practicing and a series of rescue operations. While the book has a journalistic perspective, the gaze directed at the men wearing loincloth-style swimwear and the curvaceous beauty of their bodies is reminiscent of a kind of male nude, and the style is similar to that of legendary Australian photographer Renee Ellis. This book is a redesigned American version based on the original version published in Sydney in 1983, and the images and layout are different.
