Nakaji Yasui Photographs is a collection of photographs by Nakaji Yasui, one of Japan's leading photographers. Nakaji Yasui is a representative photographer not only of the prewar Kansai photography scene, but also of the modernist photography movement of the 1930s known as "new photography." Born in Osaka in 1903, he joined the amateur photography group "Naniwa Photography Club" and produced a series of diverse and experimental works that far surpassed the photographic expressions of his time. He later became a member of the Tanpei Photography Club and engaged in avant-garde creative activities, but he was a legendary photographer who passed away at the young age of 38 due to kidney failure in 1942. Daido Moriyama showed such respect for Nakaji Yasui that he published a photo collection "A Journey to Nakaji" in homage to him, calling him "the father of modern Japanese photography." This book is a collection of works published to commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth, and will be touring exhibitions starting in the fall of 2023 at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, and Tokyo Station Gallery.
