"Light" is a collection of works published by the amateur photography club, the Tanpei Photography Club, which led the avant-garde employees of prewar Japan. It is located on the second floor of Tanpei House, which opened in 1924 as the retail division of Tanpei Pharmaceuticals in Osaka. The circle was born among amateur photographers who gathered in a corner of the city where photo supply stores, studios, and galleries were gathered. Led by Ueda Bizan and Yasui Nakaji, who was also admired by Moriyama Daido, members such as Honjo Mitsuro, Shiihara Tamotsu, Kono Toru, Kawasaki Kametaro, and Hirai Terunochi, not to be outdone by Fukuhara Shinzo and others in Tokyo's "Light and Its Harmony," constructed original images with a multifaceted approach that ranged from classical straight photography to surrealism and sometimes avant-garde, making a great contribution to the formation of modern photography in prewar Japan. This book is a collection of works published in 1940 by such members to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the club's founding, and can be called the culmination of the club. This book is from the "Treasures of Japanese Photography History" series, a series of reprints of prewar masterpieces published by Kokusho Kankokai in the 2000s.
