Naked Festival is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Yato Tamotsu. After being a male trainee at the Takarazuka Revue, Yato Tamotsu was affiliated with Nikkatsu and worked as an actor. Yato is known for photographing Yukio Mishima, but it was his partner Meredith Witherby who connected him to Mishima and translated Mishima's The Sound of Waves and Confessions of a Mask. It is unclear what prompted Yato to start taking photos, but it seems he was influenced by Witherby, who was financially wealthy and culturally well-versed. Witherby then founded John Weatherhill Publishing and published Yato's photo collection. Yato passed away in 1973 at the age of 48, leaving behind three photo collections: Movement, Naked Festival, and OTOKO. This book is the English version of Naked Festival, and it beautifully captures the beauty and dynamism of naked men who visit festivals all over Japan and carry portable shrines, dance, and play, clad only in loincloths. The preface was written by Yukio Mishima.
