"Otenki" is a collection of works by Kazuo Kitai, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. Kitai has published many documentary-based collections with themes such as "struggle," "countryside," "nature," "life," and sometimes "China." This collection focuses on insects and small animals, which he photographed over several years in the 1990s. In "To the Village," Kitai always took photos with a sense of tension, thinking about what the subject would think, but with this collection, he began to photograph insects and bugs in a more relaxed and fun mood. He said that if he was too emotional, the bugs would perceive him as murderous and run away, so he deliberately took photos lightly and alone. With the deliberate title "Otenki," and not wanting to make it into an illustrated book, Kitai added his own text to create a book that is like a travelogue.
